Along an East-West axis, the central node of the new urban development of the Xinzhu Group of the International Port Area of Xian holds the sports center and aims to connect the new district to the existing city across the river. Strategically positioned backward from the river, at the junction of the East-West axis and the Urban South-North axis, the Stadium creates an opening to the new pedestrian bridge.
A platform connects the three major architectural components (the Stadium, the Gymnasium, and the Natatorium), and circles the park, creating the feeling of one connected architectural element in nature.
The stadium’s design features arches at different scales, adding character and charm to the entire structure. A merging double arch spans the entire stadium along the South-North axis and supports the roof. The lateral connections of the structure holding the bowl, and the audience entrances feature arches at a smaller scale.
The roof structure is composed of a series of 3D truss beams that are completely articulated and hung to the arches. The facade components take the efforts of the truss beams back, leaving the concrete structure holding the bowl to be minimal and saving usable space for the audience and retails.
