Ruian Cultural & Commercial District

Next to one of the oldest libraries in China, the site is limited on two sides by a canal. Some old existing buildings must be protected (an old house and an old medicinal garden) and will act as cultural centers.
The goal is to create a commercial area linked with the cultural area. Organized like an old district around some courtyards, and using traditional materials (black bricks, traditional motif) in a new way, the project dialogues with the ancient Chinese style architecture. Like a 3D city, it is organized around places on every level, linked by stairs, lifts, and views, increasing the use and value of the shops.
