Nestled amidst the picturesque mountains on the western side of Kunming, lies a school campus that is divided into two parts by a public road that runs East to West. The North side of the campus is devoted to education, with the main administration building flanking a semi-circular entrance plaza, an behind a classroom building, a canteen, and some dormitories. On the other hand, the South side is all about lifestyle, featuring more dormitories, a canteen, and sprawling sports fields.
What truly sets this campus apart is the three magnificent new buildings that we designed – a library, a theater, and a sports center. The library, located on the North side of the campus, seamlessly complements the contour of the main plaza. Its terraced design is inspired by the rice paddles in the mountains, and its volumetry blends in perfectly with the surroundings. Inside, the library boasts a grand double-height atrium that floods the space with natural light. An outdoor feature stair leads directly to the administration office on the last floor, freeing up space for fire staircases, and providing easy access to the teaching rooms. The theater and sports center are located on the South side of the campus.
The theater uses the terrain declination to create a sitting and stage area with minimal excavation. It features an inclined, partially accessible green roof that connects to the newly created South Plaza to form an enchanting outdoor amphitheater. On the other side, it boasts a strong gate feeling, making it a landmark upon arrival. The sports center, on the other hand, is a hub of activity, holding a multi-sports playground, and a series of activity rooms (student center). And just like the theater, it too enjoys a sloping green roof that echoes the surrounding mountains.
What’s more, the campus is now fully connected thanks to the newly built two bridges that seamlessly connect the two parts of the campus. The vehicular circulations have been safely re-organized, and the newly pedestrianized heart of the campus is the perfect place for students to grow and enjoy their studies.
